2006 Dodge Durango Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: A spark plug needs its own ignition coil which is mounted on the cylinder head in a machined hole and attached securely to the intake manifold by a stud/nut on top. On the end of the coil, below the spark plug, is a rubber seal that keeps it sealed from debris. There is also a mechanically working spring inside the coil; these pieces are not removed or serviced separately. A coil is sealed at its opening into the cylinder head using an O-ring. The coil is generally removed by detaching the throttle body air intake tube. To remove the electrical connector, push down on the lock and then pull it out of the coil. Before taking out the mounting nut, spray the area at the coil base with air from canisters to remove any residue. Gently remove the coil by twisting it out from the head of the cylinder and then take it off the vehicle. Before installation, use compressed air to remove dirt from the spark plug area and then inspect the o-ring of the coil, changing it if it seems damaged. Silicone should be applied to the coil O-ring as a step in mounting the exhaust. Hold the ignition coil over the cylinder head opening and push the coil down over the stud on your spark plug. Attach the coil mounting stud nut and close it with 8 Nm (70 in.lbs) of force. Screw the electrical connector onto the coil and after that, reconnect the throttle body air tube if it was removed.
