2006 Dodge Durango Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Clock Spring Assembly on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: Prior to servicing the Clock Spring assembly, turn off the supplemental restraint system by unplugging and isolating the battery negative cable and then give the car two minutes to discharge the capacitor. Turn the steering wheel all the way in the direction you want to go, so the wheels are steering forward. To begin, get the driver air bag out of the steering wheel and then connectors for the steering wheel wire harness should be unplugged from the upper Clock Spring connector receptacles. Take out the steering wheel from the steering column so that the screws holding the steering wheel puller do not damage the Clock Spring. After that, take out the screw that secures the tilt knob and remove the two outer screws on the upper column shroud. Then, push lightly on the shroud from the outside to release its snaps and remove it. Relieve the tension on the upper shroud, take the lower shroud screw out and then separate the two light-blue wire connectors from the Clock Spring housing after the shroud has come free. Upend the Clock Spring by opening the single locking bolt at the top of the unit. If using the Clock Spring again, attach the rotor to center it for now until you install the rotor. When installing, centre the Clock Spring, drop it down the steering column and secure it by lining up the tab with the pin on the multi-function switch mounting housing. Screw the shroud onto the steering column to 2 N.m (20 in. lbs.), reconnect all wire harness connectors and mount the lower shroud using the center screw. Fit the shroud that goes over the gearshifter, firmly press down the gearshift lever gap shutter and snap the shrouds tightly together. Then, tighten the outboard screws. Replace the tilting steering wheel knob and, if a new Clock Spring is used, get rid of the plastic locking pin. Put the steering wheel back in, checking that the yellow rubber booted engagement dowel is indexed as directed, reattach the steering wheel's wirings, fit the driver air bag and attach the negative battery cable.
