2006 Jeep Liberty Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Brake Light Switch on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: Initially, turn off the supplemental protection system in vehicles that have air bags by isolating the battery cable and then allow two minutes to ensure that no accidental air bag firing happens. The brake lamp switch has an adjusting plunger that should be fully replaced if it is taken out of its mounting bracket. Disconnect the battery negative cable to disable the vehicles electrical functions, then look for the brake lamp switch close to the bottom of the steering column. Release the wire harness from the switch, turn the switch housing 30 degrees counterclockwise, push the two tabs in the locking collar into the keyed mounting hole, then remove the switch directly backward. Throw away the switch you just took out. When installing, press down on the brake, fit the tabs from the locking collar into the pointed hole on the switch housing and push them through until the switch is securely seated. Move the switch counterclockwise about 30 degrees to lock the tabs onto the bracket and then release the brake pedal without lifting it up. Rotate the release lever clockwise until it locks and is parallel to the brake lamp switch connector receptacle to set the plunger length definitively; if this isn't done right, you'll have to use a different brake lamp switch. After that, reattach the wire harness connector to the brake lamp switch and link the battery negative cable again.
