2006 Jeep Liberty Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: For used rings or while installing new rings, start by wiping the cylinder bore clean, placing the ring in the bore and verifying it is 12 mm (0.50 inch) away from the bottom before you measure the gap. Move the ring using a piston into the cylinder to check it is square and gauge the end opening with a feeler gauge, discarding not-fit rings. Clean the rings and piston ring grooves and before measuring, put a feeler gauge between the piston ring land and its groove to make sure it fits well. Replace any ring that is outside of the specification. Twist the ring on the piston to make certain it is moving freely along the groove. Since the top-side profiles of these two rings are unlike, make sure to place the No. 2 ring with its marking up toward the top of the piston. Oil ring expander should be set first, followed by the upper side rail of the oil ring, then by the lower side rail of the oil ring, the second intermediate piston ring and finally the upper piston ring. Attach the oil ring expander and then place one side rail, placing your fingers on the expander to keep it fixed in place until it's in the right spot and repeat for the opposite rail. Take out the No.2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring with the piston ring installer. The piston ring gaps should put the expander ring 45° from the side rail gaps, to avoid covering the piston pin center or being in the direction of thrust.
