Q: How to Install an A/C Clutch on 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Insert the dowel pin from the back of the compressor clutch field coil into the hole of the A/C compressor's front and mount the field coil, making certain not to pinch the wire lead. Install the compressor clutch field coil onto the A/C compressor with a new snap ring, lining up the bevel side outward and the eyelets along the proper side relative to the dowel pin. Using comparable pliers, fit the snap ring onto the compressor clutch field coil so it is securely in the groove. Handle the friction surfaces carefully during pulley and bearing installation so the clutch doesn't fail too soon. Gently place and secure the pulley and bearing assembly to the front of the A/C compressor, using a block of wood if that helps and install a fresh snap ring so it stays in place. Should you use the original clutch, pulley and bearing assembly, put back the original shim(s) onto the compressor shaft; otherwise, install a set of shims 2.54 mm thick as a trial stack. Put the clutch plate on the compressor front and tighten the bolt on the compressor shaft to a torque of 19 Nm. After you tighten the clutch drum bolts, look at the gap in many locations with a 0.90 mm wire gap gauge (recessed) or a blade gauge (other clutch plates). Set the gap between 0.35 and 0.60 mm and make suitable shim changes when needed. Pull the wire behind the connector bracket and connect the lead to the bracket. Place the A/C compressor alongside the engine and use rivets, connect the engine wire harness to the clutch's coil field connector, fasten the drivebelt and attach the negative battery cable again.
