2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service an A/C Clutch Assembly on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
    A: To maintain the compressor clutch, begin with disconnecting and isolating the negative battery cable first, then remove the accessory drive belt. Unplug the engine wire harness from the A/C compressor clutch field coil connector at the top of the compressor and remove the bolts holding the compressor to the engine. Remove the protective cover on the clutch field coil connector, unbolt the clutch lead wire from the connector bracket and hold the clutch plate in place with a band-type oil filter wrench or strap wrench before removing the compressor's shaft bolt. Take care to keep the clutch plate and pulley apart and don't let the clutch shim(s) become lost as you take them out. Gently smack the clutch plate with a plastic mallet to break it free from the compressor shaft's splines and then take out the clutch plate and any shims used. Snap ring pliers can be used to take out both the snap ring linking the pulley and bearing assembly to the front of the A/C compressor and the snap ring securing the compressor clutch field coil. During installation, make sure the dowel pin in the compressor clutch field coil matches the hole at the front of the A/C compressor and do not crush the wire lead. Replace the snap ring on the clutch field coil and check that it is correctly in place and turned properly. Setup the pulley and bearing assembly, tapping it carefully if required and hold it in place with a new snap ring. Should you use the original parts, put back the original shim; for new parts, set 2.54 mm thick shims as a trial stack. Secure the clutch plate to the A/C compressor and tighten the bolt of the shaft to 19 N.m. Once the bolts are tightened, look at different locations around the corner to check the air gap and make adjustments until it's between 0.35 and 0.60 mm. Be sure to check that the compressor clutch field coil wire harness is placed correctly. Take the wire lead behind the connector bracket, fit the compressor clutch field coil connector, mount the A/C compressor where it belongs under the engine and fasten the retaining bolts. After that, join the engine wire harness to the compressor clutch field coil connector, install the accessory drive belt and link the negative battery cable to the battery again.
