For servicing and repairs on the automatic transmission shifter, remove the console parts that block the shift lever assembly and shifter cables. Should you require access to the cables, slide a screwdriver into the hole to remove the bolts holding the shield over the gearshift and park lock cord and remove the shield from the car. Pull the shifting lever to PARK position and then remove the shift cable (1) from the shifter assembly bracket (2) and shift lever (3). Take out the shift cable retainer (2) from the special hole in the shifter assembly (2). Be sure the key is in LOCK and take out the small parking connector cable (1) from the shifter cable head (3) and its notch (3). Take all nuts (2) away from the shifter assembly (1), pulling it off the floor pan after detaching all wiring connectors (2) from the shifter assembly (1). Assemble the shifter by attaching the shifter assembly (1) to the shifter assembly studs in the floor pan and screwing in the nuts (2) while tightening them to 7 Nm (65 inch lbs.). Shifting the floor shifter lever to PARK, loosen screw (5) on the gearshift cable (1) and attach the cable (1) to the shift lever pin (3). Bind the park lock cable (1) to both the shift mechanism cam (3) and the opening in the shifter assembly (2) while checking that the key stays locked as you adjust it. Move the park lock cable adjustment tab to the unlocked position, then plug the wiring harness connectors (2) - which are next to the shifter - back into the shifter assembly. See to it that the transmission is in PARK and tighten the adjustment screw to 7 Nm (65 inch lbs.). While the driver's door is opened and all doors are off, put the key in LOCK and the shifter in PARK and then push down on the park lock cable adjustment tab to set the lock. Then, test the shifter's movement, engage and release the park lock and the BTSI, exactly as explained in this section and once done, install the shield over the cables, using bolts to secure them to the floorpan.
