2004 Dodge Dakota A/C Accumulator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install an A/C Accumulator in a Refrigerant System on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: You should first take out the negative battery terminal to disconnect it and gather the refrigerant before moving the accumulator. Dismantle the thread on the accumulator outlet port and pull off the suction line, throwing away the O-ring seal. Put plugs over the opened suction line fitting and the accumulator outlet port or wrap tape around them. Remove the bolts from between the accumulator and the bracket on the dash panel, then slide the secondary clip from the spring-lock coupler fastening the inlet tube of the accumulator to the evaporator outlet tube. With the proper tool, remove the fitting between the accumulator inlet tube and the evaporator outlet tube and throw away the O-ring seal. Once more, put plugs in or tape over the accumulator inlet and evaporator outlet tubes before you take it out from the engine compartment. During installation, if a new compressor accumulator is used, put 90 milli-liters of refrigerant oil into the refrigerant system according to the compressor instructions. Place the accumulator in the engine compartment, lift the tape or plugs from both openings of the tube fittings and remove them when the tubes are disconnected. With clean R-134a lubricant, put a matching new O-ring seal around the accumulator inlet tube's fitting and make sure the material matches those used for R-134a cars. Place the integral bracket into the designated slots in the dash board mount and attach the evaporator tube fitting to the accumulator inlet tube as you slide them together. Attach the secondary retaining clip to the spring-lock coupler on the evaporator outlet tube, after which you should tighten the two bolts holding the accumulator to its mounting bracket to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). Unplug the tape or remove the plugs from the suction line attachment and the accumulator fitting, put lubrication oil on a fresh rubber O-ring and install it on the suction line fitting, making sure you are using the specified O-ring for R-134a. Attach the suction line to the outlet port of the accumulator and install the nut for this piece, fixing it by tightening it to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.). Next, attach the black battery cable, release the refrigerant and add the refrigerant into the system.
