2005 Chrysler Pacifica Brake Disc Parts and Q&A
Q: Should You Reface the Brake Disc with Every Brake Pad Replacement on 2005 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: Disc refacing isn't required with every brake pad change, but it helps to prevent rough brake feel or vibration in the pedal when the disc surface is badly worn, warped or gives other warning signs. If that happens, refacing the disc on a hub-mounted on-car brake lathe is preferable or you can replace the disc instead. Using a hub-mounted on-car brake lathe is advised so that excessive runout is avoided and the brake disc is true to the hub and bearing of the vehicle. There are markings placed on an unaltered part or on the hat section of all discs that detail the smallest permitted thickness, with specifications also given in the specifications. The minimum allowable thickness defines the minimum thickness you can machine on the disc's surface and it is very important not to move to an even thinner thickness. It's important to make sure the faces of the brake discs and the hub adapters are free from rust, chips or further contamination prior to installing the lathe. Read and obey the manufacturer's recommendations when using and setting up the brake lathe. The surface of both disc sections should be machined at the same time to avoid a tapered or uneven finish. It is important during refacing to keep the TIR (Total Indicator Reading) and thickness variation within set limits which requires very careful use of the disc turning machines, as specifications detail in the brake disc machining section.
