Q: How to Service and Repair a Parking Brake Cable on 2005 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: Before servicing or repairing the front parking brake cable, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable and block the automatic lever in the parking brake by locking it in place. To pull the cable rods out of their connectors, it may be necessary to let out more slack by loosening the parking brake shoes. Shut the left rear cable button inboard and unclip it from the equalizer, then use pliers to join the two ends of the front cable and move the right rear cable button inboard to hold it clear from the cable connector. Following this, pull the equalizer from the cable housing in front and remove it, then remove the screw that keeps the front parking brake cable attached to the left body panel. To open the left side doors, lower the vehicle and then roll it off the hoist, remove the left front and left rear door opening sill scuff plates, left front and left rear door weather strips, lower cowl trim and the left front seat belt anchor bolt at the B-pillar. Bring the grommet from the floor pan up into the passenger area by removing the cable routing clips and trim panel from the studs under the left side carpet. Before you take out the body control module and mounting bracket, loosen three nuts at the mounting location and two wiring clips, after which you should remove the release rod from the parking brake lever and the wiring connector from the parking brake switch. Pull the parking brake lever from the cowl by taking out the bolts and nut, move it to the driver's floor and save a mental picture of its cable routing for when you put it back. Take the front cable button out of the lever take-up reel, slide down the cable into the housing until the button on the end reaches the housing, collapse the retainer fingers and remove the cable from the lever. Start by sliding the cable's leading edge into the hole of the lever's flange and finishing by fitting the cable retainer into place. Take the button at the end of the cable strand out, wrap the cable around the upward lever cam and fit the front button onto the lever take-up reel. Route all the remaining cable back to the housing, press the lever against the lower cowl on the left and mount the two bolts and one lock nut, tighten everything to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Put the body control module mounting bracket into place with three nuts and two routing clips, tighten the nuts to 125 inch lbs. (14 Nm), then attach the body control module. Link the wiring connector at the parking brake indicator lamp switch and the parking brake release rod to the parking brake lever. Go from the left side under the carpet, along the smooth outside of the floor pan and feed the front cable through the hole in the pan closest to you. When finished, use the cable routing clips to secure the flaps on the floor pan. Install the cable grommet in the floor pan, lay the carpet back into position and put on the left B-pillar trim panel and left front seat belt anchor. Install the lower cowl trim, left front and left rear door weather strips and left front and left rear door opening sill scuff plates. Lift and hold the vehicle, fit the front cable guide to the left body rail, install the cable there and tighten the screw using 17 Nm (150 inch lbs.) torque. Place the equalizer in front of the side with the cables, bring the front cable over the left rear brake tube and rear AWD module, run it to the right rear parking brake cable and while pressing the front cable connector with pliers, insert the cable button from the rear into the front cable connector and release your grip. Placed placed into the equalizer and allows the button to rest there. Lift the vehicle, release the automatic adjuster in the parking brake lever, collect the negative battery cable from the battery post and set the parking brake shoes right.
