2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee A/C Expansion Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an A/C Expansion Valve on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before handling the expansion valve, detach the negative battery cable and then remove the refrigerant from the system. Removing the air intake tube and the resonator, also takes away the A/C suction line and A/C liquid line nuts that are secured to the A/C expansion valve. Take out the A/C suction and liquid lines from the A/C expansion valve and toss the old O-ring seals. Cover the open fitting where the refrigerant line goes and set the lines aside where they won't be in the way. Get rid of the two bolts holding the A/C expansion valve to the evaporator tube tapping block, then remove the valve and throw away the O-ring seals. As before, make sure you place plugs in or tape over the opened evaporator tubes and each expansion valve port. At installation, take the tape or plugs out of both the evaporator tube fittings and the expansion valve ports and coat the new O-ring seals with clean refrigerant oil before fitting them to the evaporator tube fittings, using only those seals and oil specified for the R-134a system and refrigerant oil used with the A/C compressor. Attach the A/C expansion valve to the evaporator tube tapping block and hold it in place with the two included bolts, tightening them to 11 N.m (97 in. lbs.). Standing the A/C suction line and the liquid line loose, apply clean refrigerant oil to new O-ring seals, then put them on the lines and attach using only the proper O-rings. Join the A/C suction line and liquid line to the A/C expansion valve and after that tighten the nut securing the lines to 23 N.m (17 ft. lbs.). Put the air intake system and the resonator back, reattach the negative battery cable, pull the refrigerant and top it up with the right refrigerant.
