2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Heater Core Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Heater Core on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, let out all the engine coolant and remove the negative battery cable. If the vehicle has air bags, be sure to wait two minutes before reaching into the engine to discharge the air bag system capacitor. Do not allow damage to the front part of the instrument panel during the procedure. In some cases, you'll need to remove the heater core tubes and heater hoses. Once that's done, take out the instrument panel. At this point, unscrew the five fasteners holding the heater core and tube cover onto the HVAC housing and pull out the cover. For dual zone heating-A/C, get rid of the blend door actuator from below the passenger side of the HVAC air distribution housing. Bring the screws on the retaining bracket and heater core tubes out, remove the bolt holding the tubes to the heater core and finally take apart the HVAC housing. After removing the heater core tubes from the heater core, toss out the O-ring seals and plug up the heater core tops. Remove the heater core from the main air distribution housing. In some cases, you'll also have to take away the heater core tubes from the rest of the vehicle. Put the new heater core into the area on the passenger side of the HVAC system and remove anything covering the heater's ports. If the heater core tubes were taken off, put them back in place, lubricate any new rubber O-ring seals with clean engine coolant and set them on the tube ends. Attach the end of each heater core tube to the heater core, put the bolt into place and securely tighten it and then set and secure the screw for the heater core tube bracket on the HVAC housing, tightening it to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). If the actuator fits that side, connect it to the passenger side of the HVAC air distribution housing. Following this, fit the heater core and tube cover to the HVAC housing, use the five screws to secure everything and tighten them to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). Connect the instrument panel back, put the heater hoses on the heater core tubes under the hood, link the negative battery cable, flush the coolant if the heater core was replaced and top up the coolant.
