2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the A/C Clutch Without Discharging the Refrigerant System on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing the A/C compressor clutch with a full refrigerant system, unhook the negative terminal of the battery and take the accessory drive belt off. Separate the engine wire harness connector of the clutch from the top connector on the A/C compressor. Replace the bolts attaching the A/C compressor to the engine and hold the compressor up. Secure the clutch plate as you remove the compressor shaft bolt with either a band-type oil filter wrench or a strap wrench. Prying the clutch plate away from the pulley and bearing assembly will likely result in damage, so don't do this. Tap the clutch plate gently with a plastic mallet to unfasten it from the splines on the shaft, then take off the clutch plate and any shims that are there. Use snap ring pliers (C-4574 or a similar tool) to remove the small ring surrounding the pulley and bearing assembly and then gently move the assembly clear. Separate the screw that joins the clutch coil pigtail wire connector bracket and the ground clip on top of the compressor housing. Again, hold the external snap ring at one end with snap ring pliers and pull out to remove it, then gently slide the clutch field coil towards you off the front cover of the compressor housing. Before placing the clutch field coil on the A/C compressor, put the dowel pin from the coil into the holding hole in the compressor front cover and make sure the wire harness is facing up. Place a new snap ring around the clutch field coil, so that the bevel side is exposed and the ring is flush on the outside. Install the clutch field coil wire harness connector bracket and ground clip onto the screw. While installing the pulley and bearing assembly, make sure to not harm the parts that rub against each other. Place the assembly on the front of the A/C compressor and press it in securely, tapping lightly if you need to. Put another snap ring in place to hold together the pulley and bearing assembly. Should you reuse the original clutch, pulley and bearing pieces, place the original shim(s) back against the compressor shaft's shoulder; if using replacements, set the compressor shaft on a stack of shims 2.54 mm (0.010 in.) thick. Put the clutch plate onto the compressor shaft and tighten the compressor shaft bolt to 19 N.m (168 in. lbs.). Use a feeler gauge to see how much air gap exists between the clutch plate and the pulley and bearing assembly. If the gap is off, adjust shims to make it right. After that, attach the bolts for the A/C compressor to the engine, plug the wire harness connector onto the A/C compressor clutch coil, fit the accessory drive belt and reconnect the negative battery cable.
