2005 Jeep Liberty Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Clock Spring Assembly on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before working on the Clock Spring Assembly, pull the steering wheel straight ahead and unplug the negative battery cable while giving the system capacitor two minutes to expel its charge. Take out the air bag from the steering wheel and separate the steering wheel wire harness connector from the upper Clock Spring connector receptacle before you take out the steering wheel. If your steering wheel tilts, lower it all the way and keep the tilt release in the released position. Untwist the screws below the steering column for the lower shroud that are attached to the upper shroud and softly push inward on the sides of the upper shroud to free the snap features. Unplug the two connected data cables from the Clock Spring after taking off both shrouds. Free the Clock Spring with a small screwdriver by unlocking the two plastic latches that secure the housing to the steering column lock housing. Raise and lock the rotor's release button if you intend to use the Clock Spring again. Slide the upper shaft onto the Clock Spring, pressing the latches until they lock and finally put the instrument panel wiring back in place. Place the upper and lower holding surfaces onto the arm and fix them together using the two 2 N.m (18 in.lbs.) screws. If the steering column steers by tilt, raise it all the way and then lock the tilt release handle. Remove the plastic shield over the release button if you replace the Clock Spring. Fix the steering wheel on again, tighten the screw to the correct torque, reattach the steering wheel wires, add in your driver air bag and reconnect the negative battery cable last.
