2006 Jeep Liberty Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Clock Spring Assembly on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before handling the Clock Spring assembly, cut the battery negative lead, wait a couple minutes for the supplemental system to discharge, then return to the battery connection. Use the steering wheel to guide the wheels all the way straight. Take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel and unplug both of the wire harness connectors from the top Clock Spring receptacles. As you take off the steering wheel, pay attention to the screws so they do no damage to the Clock Spring. If your car has a tilt steering column, turn it all the way to its lowest point and leave the tilt release lever in the down position. After removing the two screws at the botttom, carefully press both sides inward on the upper shroud to unreveal the snap features. Take off both the passenger and driver driverside shrouds and separate the instrument panel wire harness from the Clock Spring. If you have an Electronic Stability Program, disconnect the main component of the SAS at the pigtail wire connector. There are plastic latches holding the Clock Spring case to the lock housing of the steering column. Loosen them with a screwdriver and remove the Clock Spring if it is faulty or if the air bag has activated. If you are reusing the Clock Spring, ensure to secure the rotor to hold the center. To put in the new steering system, slide down the Clock Spring over the steering column with the center in place, attach the latches and reconnect any optional SAS connector along with both instrument panel wire harnesses. Make sure both the upper and lower shroud are aligned before fastening the screws that hold the lower shroud to the upper shroud to 2 N.m (18 in. lbs.). If your car has one, tilt the steering column up, eliminate the plastic stop pin from the Clock Spring, slip the wheel onto the shaft, fasten the mounting screw properly, rewire the steering wheel assembly, attach the air bag to the steering wheel and reconnect the negative wire to the battery.
