2006 Dodge Durango Heater Core Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Heater Core on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: Before servicing the front heater core, release the coolant from the engine and lift the vehicle to get access. Disconnect the heater tubes from the heater core by removing the right front wheelhouse splash shield and the heater hoses from the engine bay. Bring the car down and remove the instrument panel. Then, come out the bolt that keeps the HVAC housing bracket attached to the dash panel and the two screws that hold the same bracket to the top of the housing. Let go of the HVAC housing bracket from the vehicle, unscrew the retaining bracket for the heater core from the top of the housing and take the bracket out. Withdraw the clips that secure the heater core tubes to the heater core and take off the tubes. Once you have them, remove the rubber O-rings from the tubes. Free the two screws connecting the heater core bracket to the top of the HVAC housing, then delicately remove the heater core. To assemble, install the heater core and bracket into the housing, so that the insulator sits correctly. Secure the heater core and retaining bracket with your two screws, fixing them till the torque reads 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). Before fixing a rubber O-ring seal to the fittings on the heater core tube, pre-lubricate it with clean coolant and install it using only those O-rings. Slide the heater core tubes through the dash opening and to the heater core and place the retaining clips where they belong. apply the heater core tube retaining bracket to the HVAC housing and screw it in with 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) of torque. Secure the HVAC housing bracket to where it belongs-the HVAC housing and the dash panel-by attaching it with two screws tightened to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.) and a bolt tightened to 3 N.m (26 in. lbs.). Set the instrument panel back, lift up the car to link the heater hoses to the heater core and put in the right front wheelhouse splash shield. If the heater core has been replaced, drain, flush and fill the system with coolant again.
