2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Brake Light Switch on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Ensuring the brake light switch is serviced, disconnect the negative battery cable, wait for two minutes so the air bag discharge is prevented, then proceed. The first thing is to take off the cover that sits over the steering column opening. Push down the brake pedal and turn the switch housing counterclockwise about 30 degrees so that the tabs on the switch lock match the keyed hole in the mounting bracket. Remove the keyed switch by pulling it straight out of its hole, then lift the brake pedal and take out the wire connector from the brake lamp switch. Before installing, push the plunger on the brake switch fully out, secure the wire harness connector to the switch and slowly push and hold the brake pedal. Place the tabs on the brake lamp switch locking collar into the keyed hole of the brake pedal mounting bracket, insert the tab entirely through the keyed hole until the switch housing is set in place and turn the switch housing clockwise by about 30 degrees. Be mindful not to pull harder than 20 pounds on the brake pedal, so you don't harm the brake booster. Remove your foot from the brake pedal and it should snap back into its normal place as the plunger is set automatically by a slight ratcheting noise. Next, install the steering column opening cover and then fasten the battery negative cable again.
