2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Heater Core Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Heater Core on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing or repairing the heater core, remove the engine coolant and disconnect the battery negative cable. Should this be necessary, unplug the heater hoses from their attachments to the heater core tubes in the engine area. Remove the instrument panel, unfasten the five screws attaching the heater core and tube cover to the HVAC housing and then take away the heater core and tube cover. In case your car has dual zone heating and A/C, pull out the blend door actuator on the passenger side of the air distribution housing. Then, take out the screw keeping the heater core tubes and retaining bracket secure on the HVAC housing to avoid any engine coolant spills on the carpet. Loosen the bolt, take out the heater tubes, separate the connectors from the heater core tubes and dump the O-ring seals. After you install plugs or tape over the holes, remove the heater core slowly from its place in the air distribution housing. When installing, slide the heater core into the HVAC air housing located on the passenger side and make sure no tape or plugs are on the heater core ports. If you took out the heater core tubes, position them again inside your car. Soak the rubber O-ring seals in clean engine coolant, install it onto the heater core tubes and always install the proper O-ring. Chain the heater core tubes to the heater core and fasten the bolt that holds them, making sure it is tight. Attach the screw on the heater core tube retaining bracket to the HVAC housing, tightening it to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). When necessary, fit the replaced blend door actuator back onto the passenger side part of the housing. After that, set the heater core and tube cover into the HVAC housing and attach it with the five screws, turning them to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). Reinstall the instrument panel, fit the heater hoses onto the heater core tubes under the hood and link the negative battery cable. Replacing the heater core requires a flush of the cooling system and filling the engine cooling system again.
