2006 Jeep Liberty Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Handle the Removal and Replacement of a Faulty Passenger Air Bag on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before handling a defective or damaged air bag in a passenger vehicle, you must disconnect the battery negative cable, wait two minutes and allow the capacitor to discharge. Take out the passenger air bag door from the instrument panel and then remove the two screws on each side of the housing that link it to the metal brackets on the support component. Slide the retainer for the air bag wire harness connector to the far left so it comes free while you pull the air bag. Do not yank on the instrument panel wire harness or pry into the connector insulators to preserve the system. With the latches depressed on either side, pull straight on the insulators to un-connect the connectors. Withdraw the air bag and its console together from behind the instrument panel and for deployed air bags, toss out the old mounting brackets and use new ones. While installing, put the passenger air bag unit next to the instrument panel and renew all electrical connections, listening carefully for the click when each connector is fully engaged. Line up the air bag on the metal brackets, with the alignment pins connected and then put in and tighten the screws to 6 N.m (55 in. lbs.). After replacing the passenger air bag door, make sure not to reconnect the battery negative cable until after you have run the supplemental restraint system test after any supplemental restraint system servicing.
