2010 Jeep Liberty A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Visteon A/C Clutch on 2010 Jeep Liberty?
A: Align the A/C clutch field coil with the front of the A/C compressor, making sure the coil tabs and wire lead match correctly or you could damage them. Position the field coil tabs against the sunken back part of the compressor and install the clutch field coil using a two jaw puller, Compressor Field Coil Installer 9352 and Spacer 9353. Using a screw tightened to 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.), attach the clutch field coil wire lead and bracket to the A/C compressor next to the clutch electrode. Square the pulley and bearing assembly at the front of the compressor and pay attention for a difference in the sound during the tapping because that shows it has reached the bottom of the housing. Put the pulley and bearing assembly securely in place with the Installer 9355 tool and a hammer. Put the snap ring in the groove so the beveled edge is facing out and fix it in place using A/C Snap Ring Pliers 9764. Make sure the wire lead from the clutch coil can move freely between the compressor side panels and the pulley and bearing. Use the old shims where possible when replacing the clutch; if the compressor was earlier without a clutch, place the 1.0, 0.50 and 0.13 mm shims from the new hardware package. Attach the clutch shims to the compressor shaft and tighten the bolt of the clutch plate to the mounting bracket with a strap wrench to 15 Nm (133 in.lbs). Look at the air gap between the clutch plate and the assembly that includes the pulley and bearings by using 90° wire gauges and add or remove shims to keep the gap within 0.35 and 0.65 millimeters (0.014 to 0.025 inches). Put the A/C compressor on the mounting bracket and tighten the securing bolts. Route the engine wire harness to the compressor clutch field coil connector and place the accessory drive belt so you can reconnect the negative battery cable.
