The first step to service the air bag Control Module is to cut off the air bag system by removing and isolating the battery negative cable. Allow the system capacitor to discharge by stopping for two minutes. The air bag Control Module hosts the impact sensor used to set off the air bag; do not hit or kick this module and if it is dropped, it must be replaced. Take out the screw connecting the floor duct adapter to the heater-air conditioner housing and afterwards remove the adapter. Pull the carpets from each side of the floorboard, moving the tunnel back to see the air bag Control Module. Unscrew the two screws at the top and bottom locations on the mounting bracket just above the driver's seat. Lift the module up enough to remove it from the locator pins and pull out the module far enough to get to the wire harness connector. To disconnect the instrument panel wire harness, first slide the red Connector Position Assurance lock to the right, press the latch tab and pull the connector free. For installing the module, set it up beneath the instrument panel and plug the wire harness connector back in. Make sure the latch and the CPA lock are both engaged during this step. Set the module over the mounting bracket, using the locator pins to make sure the arrow on its label is pointing forward. Mount the floormount in place using 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) for both screws that fasten it to the floor bracket, restore the carpeting, fit the floor duct adapter onto the heater-air conditioner housing, then secure it with a screw tightened to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.). Do not reattach the negative
Battery Cable before the air bag system verification test is done.
