How can a Backing Plate be serviced and repaired on Jeep Cherokee?

To work on the backing plate, first, remove the wheel tire assembly followed by the brake drum brake shoes. To detach the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever, compress the parking brake cable retainer tabs, and push the retainer and cable through the Support plate. First, detach the brake line connected to the wheel cylinder, then unbolt the wheel cylinder from the support plate. Afterward, remove the axle shaft and take out the bolts securing the support plate to the axle to remove the support plate. To install, apply a bead of silicone sealer around the axle mounting surface of the support plate and install on axle flange and tighten the attaching bolts to 115 N.m (85 ft. lbs.). Next, after applying silicone sealer to the wheel cylinder mounting surface, install the wheel cylinder, and the brake line in the wheel cylinder. The parking brake cable must be installed in the support plate, followed by the axle shaft. Attach the parking brake cable to the lever on the secondary shoe and install the brake shoes on the support plate; use the brake gauge to adjust shoes to the drum. The brake drum and wheel-tire assembly must finally be installed, and the brake system bled.

How can a Backing Plate be serviced and repaired on Jeep Wrangler?

To access the backing plate for servicing and repairing, the vehicle must be raised, supported, and the tire/wheel assembly removed. Subsequently, remove the disc brake caliper adapter, the disc brake rotor, and the wheel speed sensor. At the equalizer, lock out the front brake cable and remove the rear parking brake cable from the equalizer. Remove the axle shaft after detaching the parking brake cable from the lever on the brake shoe at the axle. Strike the support plate from the axle shaft and disassemble the rear park brake shoes and finally remove the support plate from the axle seal plate.
