Can the Crankshaft Seal Be Replaced Without Removing the Timing Chain Cover on a Four-Cylinder Engine on Jeep Cherokee?

To replace a front crankshaft oil seal, disconnect the battery cable and remove the vibration damper. Pry out the old seal and install a new one with its lip facing towards the inside. Employ a big socket and hammer to knock in the seal. Take off cover and use a screwdriver to take out old seal. Install the new seal after cleaning the bore; push it in using force. Put back the timing chain cover.

How is the Crankshaft Seal Installed in a 2.4L Four Cylinder Engine on Jeep Wrangler?

The one-piece rear Crankshaft Seal is pressed into a bore machined into the rear main bearing cap and engine block. Begin by removing the transmission, and if equipped, take out the clutch components. Next, remove the flywheel or drive plate. Using the chamfered edge on the crankshaft, carefully pry out the old seal with a 3/16-inch flat blade screwdriver, ensuring not to nick or scratch the crankshaft or seal bore. To prevent an oil leak after installing the new seal, avoid damaging the crankshaft sealing surface or the bore in the engine block. Clean the crankshaft and seal bore thoroughly, degreasing these areas with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner or acetone. If there are any burrs or scratches on the crankshaft chamfer edge, sand them with 400-grit sandpaper. Do not lubricate the lip or outer diameter of the new seal; it must be installed as it comes from the manufacturer. Position the new seal onto the crankshaft, and using an appropriate size driver and pilot tool, gently and gradually drive the seal into the cylinder block until it is flush with the outer surface. Ensure the words "THIS SIDE OUT" face out toward the rear of the engine; if the seal is unmarked, the seal lip must face in. Be cautious not to drive the seal past flush, as this will cause an oil leak. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.
