2005 Jeep Liberty A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service an A/C Clutch on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: Set out by unplugging the negative battery line and then remove the accessory drive belt before anything else. First, disconnect the wire harness connector from the compressor clutch field coil connector and take out the bolts that tie the compressor to the bracket. Once the compressor is supported, put the pins on your spanner wrench (Special Tool 6462 in Kit 6460) into the holes of the clutch plate and hold that plate still to remove the nut. To get the clutch plate off, use Special Tool 6461 found in Kit 6460. Then, take out the remaining clutch shims that are attached to the compressor shaft. Take off the pulley and bearing assembly by unfastening it with snap ring pliers. Through the front housing hub outside snap ring groove, fit the lip of the puller jaws (Special Tool 6141-1 from Kit 6125) and install the shaft protector (Special Tool 6141-2 from Kit 6125). Install the bolts that come with the puller (Special Tool 6461 in Kit 6460) through the puller flange and into the puller jaws and turn the puller center-bolt clockwise until the pulley and bearing assembly is out. Unscrew the clip that holds the clutch coil wire harness to the compressor front housing, take off the snap ring and remove the A/C clutch field coil as well. In installing, put the A/C clutch field coil onto the A/C compressor front housing and lock it in place with the snap ring pliers, checking that the wire harness is not pinched with the retaining clip while attaching the screw. Centre the pulley and bearing assembly on the front housing and use the installer (Special Tool 6871) to install it, pushing its threaded end onto the compressor shaft and turning the installer nut until it sits up against the front housing. Press down on the snap ring to seal it inside the groove, with its beveled side facing out. Spin the assembly on to install it on the compressor wedge-like piece and press to ensure it stayed put. Check that there is enough room between the clutch field coil wire and the clutch pulley and during a new clutch assembly, place the original shims under the clutch or the shims found in the clutch assembly package if the compressor did not have a clutch. After the shims are on the shaft, lift the clutch plate and put it in place, then toll the compressor shank with the driver until the plate sits against the shims on the shaft. Put the clutch nut or bolt on the compressor shaft and fasten it to 17.5 N.m (155 in.lbs.) and then verify the clutch air gap with a feeler gauge making any adjustments with shims as needed. With the mounting bolts loose, put the A/C compressor onto the bracket and tighten each bolt to 27 N.m (20 ft.lbs.) if you have a 2.4L gasoline, 2.5L/2.8L diesel engine or use Sequence 1 on the 3.7L gasoline engine. Run the wire harness into the compressor clutch field coil connector, install the accessory drive belt, reattach the negative battery cable and follow the Clutch Break-in instructions.
