2006 Jeep Commander Heater Core Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Heater Core on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: The rear heater core is serviced by taking out the rear HVAC housing and putting it on a workbench. Remove the foam seal from the flange on the bottom of the rear HVAC housing; if it shows any cracks or is squashed, it should be replaced. Push down the inner half of the flange a bit and separate the heater core tubes from the heater core flange. Open the two hooks that hold the rear heater core in place and gradually remove the heater core from the rear HVAC compartment. When the foam seals in the heater core are no longer in good shape, they must be replaced. Should a heater core swap be needed, take out the two clips holding the heater core tubes to the rear heater core and unscrew the tubes, elimating the two O-ring seals. When you install the new rubber O-rings, soak them in clean engine coolant and put them onto the heater core tube fittings, using only the O-rings required for the cooling system made from special material. Should you remove the heater core, link the heater core tubes to the rear heater core and hold them in place with the two retaining clamps. Attach the rear heater core into the opening of the rear HVAC housing so that the foam seals are in place and the tabs sit completely inside slots. Pivot down the inside segment of the flange at the back HVAC housing and slide in the heater core tubes. Afterward, stick the foam seal onto the flange and change it if it's damaged or not in good shape. When you replace the heater core, don't install the rear HVAC housing right away; instead, flush the cooling system first.
