How to Service the Fuel Tank Module on Dodge Dakota?

Before handling the fuel pump module, first put it in neutral, remove the fuel tank and bleed off the pressure in the fuel system, as it remains under pressure at all times. Before uninstalling, check the module's rotational position on the indexing arrow found on top. First, use your Lockring Remover/Installer 9340 to engage the outside edge of the lockring, then fit a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar to the Remover/Installer and turn it counter-clockwise to take out the lockring which will slightly spring up the module. Remove the module from the fuel tank very carefully so that you do not bend the float arm. As you install, lay down a new rubber seal in the opening, then set the fuel pump module into the place where the seal was and wrap a lockring around the module. Continue to turn the module clockwise or counterclockwise so the embossed arrow points directly to the center mark in the base of the tank which helps ensure the fuel fitting points to the driver's side of the vehicle. Attach Lockring Remover/Installer 9340 to the lockring, turn it clockwise with a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar until it seats in all seven notches and then reinstall the fuel tank.

Before you service or repair the fuel tank, drain and move it out, always releasing the fuel system pressure since it stays under pressure at all times. Simply use Special Tool 6856 to remove the locknut on the plastic fuel pump module which is held onto the fuel tank and the module will raise up slightly. Remove the module very carefully from the tank. When you install a new fuel pump module, don't forget to change the rubber gasket. Slide the module inside the tank's opening with a new gasket, secure it with the locknut and install it just finger tight for now. Turn the module until the indent on it shows the center line, making certain the fitting from the fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator is correctly installed towards the driver's side of the vehicle. Run Special Tool 6856 to turn the locknut to its recommended torque, then gear up the fuel tank in its place.
