How to Service the Headlight Switch on Jeep Cherokee?

Before starting the service, you must deactivate the air bag system by taking out the battery's negative cable, then wait for two minutes so the air bag capacitor is discharged and cannot deploy accidentally. Begin with taking out the knee blocker from the instrument panel. Push the headlamp switch down to ON, enter the steering column opening from the outboard side and press the release button found on the headlamp switch body inside the opening. As you continue to hold the release button down, pull out the headlamp switch control knob and shaft at the same time. After that, disconnect the two wire harness connectors on the panel from the headlamp switch receptacle and remove the headlamp switch from the panel. To install, place the headlamp switch where it belongs at the opening between the instrument panel and the steering column-then reinstall the wire harness connectors. Tuck the switch into the hole where it will be mounted and then put on the spanner nut, fastening it at 2.7 Nm (24 in.lbs.). Place the shaft of the knob and the shaft unit through the spanner nut to reach into the headlamp switch and push it all the way down. To complete, install the knee blocker on the device's panel and wire the negative cable from the battery back to the engine compartment.

How to Safely Service a Headlight Switch on Jeep Wrangler?

Be sure to take precautions on cars fitted with air bags when working on the headlamp switch by taking care that the air bags are not accidentally deployed. When the headlamp switch was on, wait 5 minutes to ensure the ceramic dimmer resistor as to cool before touching the switch and getting burns. You start by removing and isolating the negative battery cable. Put the headlamp switch control knob out to the ON stop. To reach the headlamp switch depress the control knob and shaft release button on the switch body which is located with a reach under the instrument panel outboard of the steering column. Pull the switch control knob (and shaft unit) out via the headlamp switch, whilst holding the release button. Delete the knee blocker in the instrument panel. Then disconnect the spanner nut holding the headlamp switch on the instrument panel slide on bracket. Pull the headlamp switch off of the mounting bracket in order to reach the wire harness connectors and disconnect two connectors at the headlamp switch. Take out the headlamp switch of the instrument panel. Installation wise, place the headlamp switch against the instrument panel and bring the two wire harness connectors back together. Install the switch behind the mounting bracket and use spanner nut and tighten the same to the tune of 2.7 Nm (24 in. lbs.). Assemble back the knee blocker in the instrument station. Insert the shaft of the headlamp switch control knob and shaft unit through the steering column opening cover into the headlamp switch and fully insert it all the way into headlamp switch. Lastly, replace the negative battery cable.

Insert the shaft of the headlamp switch control knob and shaft unit through the steering column opening cover into the headlamp switch and fully insert it all the way into headlamp switch. Lastly, replace the negative battery cable.
