Q: How to Replace and Repair A/C Hose Lines in the Rear Underbody on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: In order to change rear under body A/C line, refrigerant must be recovered first by getting it out of refrigerant system. Take out the air box and hoist the vehicle up. Take off the passenger side tires, and the front and back inner fenders. Remove the front underhood A/C line, and the underbody A/C line assembly at the rear HVAC unit. Loosen the body mounts on the drivers side and take all the body mounts off the passenger side. To support the body put jack stands at the front and the back of the vehicle on the outside passenger side. Unscrew all the available underbody A/C assembly bracketts off the body, raise the hoist about 3-4 inches so that the body is above the frame enough to be able to access the underbody assembly. Once you have removed all the A/C line brackets, you should now remove the entire A/C line assembly. To repair the 5/8 front A/C tube, the process should include discharging and recovering the refrigerant, pulling out the air box, jacking up the vehicle and taking out the passenger side front tyre and inner fender well. Remove the suction line spring lock from the suction jumper, mark the tube marked location with the cutting device, make a cut, and assure that the substitute tube was the right size. Scuff the end of both the tubes, get the correct Lokring size on the 5 8 inchy, apply the sealant, place the Lokring and use the installation tool to compress. Drain the suction line spring lock again, put in place the inner fender well and tire, and the car can be put back to the position and the air box can be fixed back. Take out and recharge the refrigerant system. In repairing 3/8" front A/C tube it proceeds like 5/8" tube, except using the 3/8" specifications. In repairing 5/8 rear A/C tube rep approximately the same thing but recover and flush the refrigerant, raise the vehicle, remove the passenger side rear tire and inner fender well, disconnect the passenger rear A/C lines at the rear evaporator, mark and cut the tube, size the replacement tube and proceed with the Lokring installation as directed. Reconnect the rear evaporator, put back the inner fender and tire, drop vehicle and evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. To repair the 3/8 rear A/C tube repeat the procedure in the 5/8 rear tube. To install the full rear A/C line, insert the assembly into the car, install the brackets which will not be open after removing the body, jack the car up in order to align the body and frame, insert the other bracket, tighten all body mount bolts, remove the jack stands, connect the underbody A/C lines with the rear HVAC unit, attach the other A/C lines, reinstall the interior fenders and tires, jack the car down, and last of all, evacuate and charge the refrigerant system.
