- Q: How to replace speed sensors in different types of automatic transmissions on Dodge Challenger?A:This procedure applies only to the 42RLE (hydraulic, with adaptive electronics) automatic transmission, where the input speed and output speed sensors are located on the left side of the transmission housing, with the input speed sensor being the forward unit and the output speed sensor the rear one. In the NAG1 (all-electronic) transmission, the two speed sensors are located inside the control unit on top of the valve body, and replacing either sensor requires a professional automatic transmission specialist. For the BHP45/BHP45RE transmissions, these sensors are integral components of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and cannot be serviced separately. To replace a sensor, first raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands, then locate the transmission speed sensor to be replaced and place a drip pan underneath, as some ATF will leak out upon removal. Disconnect the electrical connector from the speed sensor, then remove the mounting bolt. Installation is the reverse of removal; if reinstalling the old sensor, ensure the O-ring is in good condition and apply a non-hardening thread locking compound to the threads of the mounting bolt.
