A cold-applied, urethane adhesive is used to seal the space between the windshield and the window frame and a thin layer of primer helps hold it in place. Because the windshield supports the roof and urethane bonding is stubborn, it can be tough to retrieve the glass when removing a car. Make sure a windshield and seals are available before you begin the removal process. Take out the rear view mirror, rain sensor module and cowl grille, while protecting the surrounding paint. Tear out the molding from the top of the windshield and, with someone helping you, use a special wire cutout tool on the urethane bond sealing the windshield. Remove the windshield from the car by following the right procedure. Following the installation, let the vehicle stand still for a full 24 hours before using it. Before putting up the door glass, roll it down by half to allow water leaks to drain. Try to take off all the old urethane you can, gently cutting it away with a razor knife to avoid damaging the pain on the windshield fence. Wash the windshield fence, leaving a little old urethane on it and change any bent spacers, keeping a little bit of old glue. Trim the original urethane bead on the windshield fence so it's about 1 mm thick, then use new adhesive-backed spacers where needed. Attach a new rubber seal to the top of the windshield, put the windshield into the frame and ensure it sits flat across the fence. Put some markers onto the windshield and fence and wipe the inside of the windshield with an ammonia-based cleaner. Add glass prep adhesion promoter and glass primer to the edges of the windshield, wait for it to dry and check that it is even. Make sure the windshield fence is cleaned and then use pinch weld primer, so it is installed evenly on both sides. Use a triangular nozzle to apply a 10 mm wide bead of adhesive beginning at the center bottom, then smoothen the other ends. Having someone help, put the windshield in place and adjust it so that it fits over the spacers. Next, install the cowl grille, rear view mirror and rain sensor module one more time.
