When wanting to service or repair the starter motor, unplug the negative battery cable and put a steering wheel lock in place. Lift and support your vehicle and then take out the underbody splash shield. Next, take out the intermediate steering shaft center bolt, part it into upper and lower sections and unplug the electrical connection from the starter. Take out the three starter bolts and remove the wiring clip, let the starter down and maneuver it around the exhaust toward the steering shaft; then, pull the starter from under the vehicle. Before putting it in place, get the starter revving, swing it by the transmission and exhaust, then aim it upward toward the engine. Align the best place of the starter dust shield correctly, put the dust shield onto the engine block using the plastic retainer and hold everything in place using the screws. Place the starter, along with its bolts and make sure to tighten them to a torque of 54.2 N.m or 40 ft. lbs. Carefully locate the flattened areas in the intermediate shaft and those in the intermediate shaft extension and join and align the holes in both, as you do so. Pinch the intermediate shaft onto the extension using the bolt and tighten it until you reach 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.). Install the splash shield again, bring the vehicle down, get rid of the steering wheel holder and put the negative battery terminal back in its place.
