- Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Belt on Chrysler Pacifica?A:The first step for timing and sprocket service is to remove the timing covers and turn the crankshaft until the pointer on the sprocket points to the TDC mark on the oil pump. Ensure the camshaft sprocket timing marks match the marks on the inner cover which may mean turning the crankshaft again. Since the engine isn't freewheeling, you should loosen the valve train rocker assemblies first. Unlock the fuel pressure, cut the battery cable, detach the two cylinder head covers and loosen the rocker arms. After that, open the front timing belt cover and mark in which direction the belt runs so you can reuse it later. Rotate the engine clockwise until you can see that the mark on the crankshaft matches the TDC mark on the oil pump housing and both the camshaft sprocket and the oil pump timing marks connect with the marks on the rear cover. Pull out the timing belt tensioner and belt, examine the tensioner for fluid leaks and test that the arm and bolt on the pivot can rotate smoothly; swap out the entire assembly if it's damaged. Press the compression chamber handle into the body as you hold it in a vise for pin orientation and then fix a pin to keep the handle held. Redo both the crankshaft rotation and the alignment checks after making sure timing is right. If you notice the timing belt is hardened, cracked, missing some teeth or worn in an unusual manner, exchange the belt for a new one. Take away the housing for the upper and lower timing belts, the coolant recovery container, the right mount holding the engine in place and the engine support bracket. When the oil pump housing TDC mark is next to the crankshaft sprocket TDC mark, hold the crankshaft until the trailing edge of the sprocket tooth is totally lined up with the TDC mark.
