You must take off the engine covers which hook on to the
Fuel Rail, before removing the camshaft. Unplug the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor harness, the short runner valve (SRV) and the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor harness at the back of the engine's
Intake Manifold. After that, take out the air cleaner housing and clean air tube, plus disconnect the electronic
Throttle Body harness connector, the brake booster vacuum hose (it's best to disconnect from the booster), the evaporative purge vacuum hose and the make-up air (MUA) hose from the intake manifold. Compress the air tank to release pressure, separate the fuel injector wiring from the vehicle and detach the fuel supply feed. Never take out the negative
Battery Cable if the
Radiator draincock or cylinder block drain plugs are still loose or hot, since this can produce a burst of hot coolant and could cause burns. Remove the cooling system, rotate the accessory drive
Belt Tensioner counterclockwise as far as it will go, take away the accessory
Drive Belt and now slowly move the tensioner into its free arm position. You can drain the system without removing the
Power Steering Pump hoses. Loose the three bolts from the power steering pump mounting holes, then lift off the pump and lay it aside. Take off the
Ignition Coil electrical connectors, unbolt the coils from their mounts and then remove the ignition coils. Take out the generator, A/C compressor and radiator. After that, get rid of the intake manifold and cover off each cylinder head before removing the left and right cylinder heads. Unbolt the
Oil Pan, the oil pick-up tube and replace the windage tray/oil pan gasket. Take out the cover for the timing case, the oil pump, the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. Lift out the tensioner/thrust plate assembly and pay attention to the lifters, so you place them in their right position during installation. Take out the tappets and the retainer assembly from the engine, put a long bolt into the front of the camshaft to help you remove it and be careful around the cam bearings with the cam lobes.
