Because the EGR valve and tube are always hot, make sure the engine is properly cooled before you start servicing it. Removing the battery for at least two minutes will make the engine controller forget its fault codes. Find out the important elements of the EGR system, for example, the upper tube (2), the EGR valve (1) and the lower tube (3). Take readings from the computerized diagnostic system and store any DTCs. Unplug the connector for the negative battery, then get rid of the purge solenoid and move it to a different position. Release the lock on the electrical connector of the EGR valve and take out the bolts that secure the EGR tube to the exhaust manifold. Once lower tube bolts are out of the EGR valve, detach the tube (3) and, in the same manner, take out the upper tube bolts (2). After that, unscrew the bolts holding the EGR valve in place (1) and remove the valve, be sure to clean the mounting area where the EGR valve goes.
