To work on the vacuum brake booster, start by moving the driver's seat as far as it will go in the rear and removing the negative battery connection (2). After that, take out the windshield wiper module and the master cylinder. If the car includes MK25 and ESP, you'll need to detach the wire harness (6) linked to the pedal travel sensor (7). Take off the vacuum hose (3) linking the check valve (2) on the booster (1), leaving the check valve attached to the booster. With the brake switch out of the way, slide the brake booster push rod off the pin on the brake pedal by placing a small screwdriver between the pin retaining clip and sliding it to loosen the clip. At the time of reassembly, remove retaining clip (3) and fit a new one instead. Slide the booster push rod out of the brake pedal pin, remove the four nuts from the power brake booster mounting and then pull the power brake booster forward to remove it through the opening equally spaced between the cross-brace and the windshield.

Automatic booster check valves are held in place by a grommet (2), so inspect it and replace it if it seems worn or broken. Attach the vacuum hose to the booster check valve and once the master cylinder is in place with a new gasket and retaining nuts, make sure to attach it without damaging the booster or master cylinder. Lastly, pump brake fluid until you hear the system fill and bleed.
