Begin by pulling out the piston and shaft to replace and remove the piston rings. Extract the No. 1 and No. 2 piston rings from the piston using a ring expander after removing the upper oil ring side rail (2), the lower oil ring side rail (2) and the oil ring expander (1). During installation, measure the gap between the piston rings and the cylinder and piston. Place the piston rings in this pattern: oil ring expander, lower oil ring side rail, upper oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Begin by placing one end of the side rail in the space between the piston ring and the oil ring expander. When that is in place, hold it, press down lightly and install the oil ring expander just as you would before using a piston ring expander. Following that, add the rail on the bottom, followed by the top rail and be sure the No. 2 flange with the manufacturer's marking is at the top of the piston. Fit the piston rings using a ring expander and put in the No. 2 piston ring before the No. 1 ring. Set the position of the oil ring expander gap (5), open the gaps of the piston ring No. 2 and No. 1 to stagger the ring space for better oil movement and then set the piston lower and upper rail gap (4 and 1), both rail gaps and the ends of both piston rings as indicated.
