- Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston Ring Set on Dodge Challenger?A:First, find out how much space is left between the piston rings, the cylinder bore and the piston. Always put the No. 2 piston ring so its manufacturer's I.D. mark (dot) points upwards towards the top of the piston. The order for installing the piston rings should be the oil ring expander, the lower oil control ring side rail, the upper ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate ring and finally the No. 1 top ring. To put in the side rail, slide one tip into the space next to the piston ring groove and press down so it doesn't need a piston ring expander tool. Put in place the lower side rail before installing the upper side rail. The following step is to set in No. 2 piston ring and then put in the No. 1 piston ring. Position the piston ring so that the gaps are correct and make certain the gap of the oil control ring expander is at least 45° different from the gaps around the side rail, apart from the piston pin center or along the thrust direction.
