Q: How to Properly Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump Without Damaging It on Dodge Challenger?
A:
Place the power steering pump pulley directly on the power steering pump shaft to start service and repair. After that, attach Installation Spacer 6936 above the pump pulley. The shaft on later build pumps is threaded more shallowly, so put 13 mm (0.5 in.) of washers on Spacer 6936 before installing Installer C-4063C on the pump. Check the depth of the shaft hole to decide if you need the stack of washers; later pumps will be 20 mm (0.78 in.) while the original ones were 32 mm (1.25 in.). Should you need it, place the washers stack over Spacer 6936. Installers should use Installer C-4063C together with Forcing Screw C-4063-2 in the project. Slide Thread Installer C-4063C into all of the threads of the power steering pump shaft and then rotate the Nut down, pushing it against the washers and Spacer on the pump pulley. While tightening the Installer Nut, keep both the accessory tools and the pulley in line with the pump shaft and continue until Spacer 6936 strikes the end of the shaft, after which the Installer Nut won't spin anymore. The power steering pump must be installed on the engine as the last step.
Q: How to Install a Power Steering Pump for a 2.7L/3.5L Engine on Dodge Charger?
A:
To add the power steering pump, you must line up the pump with the mounting holes on the bracket of your engine. Fit the three bolt assemblies for pump mounts through the holes in the pulley and engine bracket and tighten each to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) torque. It is important to attach a new O-ring, put some clean power stearing fluid inside and then assemble the pressure hose. Gate the pressure tube to the exposed end of the pump and tighten the hose lug to 47 Nm (35 ft. lb.) torque. Fasten the hose to the pump by clamping it on. After installing the crankshaft, put on the serpentine drive belt, then the air cleaner housing and finally the inlet tube. Now, place the battery negative cable on the right side of the battery, ensure a good fit and get the power steering system filled and bled.
