Whenever an SRS component is deployed, all the restraints used at the scene must be replaced before the vehicle is used again. A deployed driver air bag requires both a Clock Spring replacement and a check of the steering column. If the air bag for the passenger goes off, the instrument panel trim cover must be changed. When a car air bag releases, so must the seat belt tensioners that go with them. When an air bag is deployed in the side curtain, the headliner and upper trim of A, B and C-pillar on that side must be replaced, since these are designed to be thrown away and they could be damaged or weakened. A sunroof should be checked for damaged drain tubes or hoses after a side curtain air bag is set off. Following any collision, you need to inspect and restore the surface mounting and brackets for the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) and impact sensors to their correct state, since problems with fixing them could stop the air bags from protecting the vehicle's occupants. air bags and seat belt tensioners can run through a short pigtail harness or a wire harness takeout to get power from the vehicle. After they are deployed, the wire harness takeout needs to be repaired because it can suffer damage. The rest of your vehicle's parts should be checked and replaced when you notice anything wrong with them. All air bag squibs should be confirmed as used when inspecting a vehicle with multistage air bags, since only a single initiator may work during deployment. Before taking out the deployed air bags for recycling, a diagnostic tool should be used to check both squibs. Both the diagnostic tool and the 16-way Data Link Connector (DLC) need the latest updates and need to be connected on the driver side underneath the instrument panel. You should read and record any active Diagnostic Trouble Code data once you turn the ignition switch to ON. Should no codes be present for either Driver or Passenger Squib 1 or 2, handle the air bag as if both squibs are active. Live pyrotechnic material can be found in air bags with two initiators, so air bag systems should not be discarded until you are certain they have deployed properly and all air bag systems and seat belt tensioners once deployed or unused must be disposed of according to the regulations.
